Charlie's Run 4 Kids

Miserable weather didn't deter the Southern Cross Garrison or the crowds from fundraising during Charlie’s Run 4 Kids family fun day.

The Hunter Hornet Squad arrived at Lydon Oval in Dudley in time to see the first of 22 runners, accompanied by their support entourage, arrive from their 5 day 150km journey from Seal Rocks.

Charlie's Run 4 Kids was established in 2013 where Charlie, who was battling Neuroblastoma, was raising funds for the Children's Hospital arts and craft. One of the fundraising activities was a run from Seal Rocks to Dudley. Although Charlie lost her fight, the event continues in her name, with fundraising efforts this year going towards another family battling cancer.

Dudley is a close-knit community and really came together to show their support, despite the cold, miserable weather conditions. Lydon Oval, the destination for the runners and location of the family fun day, had been populated with a sea of tents, housing family members and friends of the runners. A scattering of food and coffee vendors fed the crowd, while local musicians entertained on the stage at the front. The kids were kept occupied with rides and a jumping castle to the rear of the venue.

The troopers were tasked with getting photos with the crowd, for a gold coin donation, contributing to the total fundraising efforts for the event. The willingness for people to give was humbling and the Garrison looks forward to being involved again with Charlie's Run 4 kids in the future.
